Hiccups are an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdominal cavity and plays an important role in breathing. With hiccups, the normally smooth function of this muscle is short circuited by some type of irritation, and the muscle goes into spasm. As the diaphragm moves downwards, the person hiccuping inhales quickly, and the vocal cords snap shut across the throat, That's what causes the 'hic'.
Others causes are gulping air, carbonated drinks, indigestion; also eating on the run or eating while laughing and talking results in hiccups and no reason at all that we know of.
Whilst everyone has their own idea about curing hiccups, here are some folk cures that work.
Take a deep breath and count to 30.
Try a spoonful of sugar under your tongue.
Chew some papaya or pineapple; digestive problems, including heartburn, can aggravate hiccups.
Plug your ears and drink up. It was suggested to plug both ears with you fingers, then drink a glass of water through a straw.
I always take a teaspoon of vinegar and have had some success, although I haven't had hiccups for quite a while and it is said that a teaspoon of vinegar a day is very good for you.
