Hydroponic Cultivation Technology

New Release - July 27 2006
PhytoMatrix, the nutrition industry’s first supplement containing fully standardized and completely plant-based vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.

Modern farming practices have dramatically compromised the nutritional value of many fruits and vegetables. And while experts agree that supplementation can provide the body with these missing nutrients, many supplements contain synthetic, chemically derived, mined or chelated minerals and vitamins that studies show are not readily absorbed or used by the body.
Scheduled for sale beginning during the fourth quarter, PhytoMatrix will not contain any synthetic or chemically derived active ingredients. Instead, it will contain vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals that have been absorbed by a plant’s roots and stored in its tissue. When harvested, these plants provide all-natural ingredients.

An article in the Vol. 71, 2000, edition of peer-reviewed Journal of Food Chemistry stated that plant-based minerals are much more easily absorbed by the body. The article referenced a study showing the body was able to use less than 10 percent of the synthetic minerals contained in the most popular brands of multivitamins. By contrast, the body was able to assimilate between 80 percent to 100 percent of the minerals derived from plants.

Mannatech has obtained exclusive rights to a patented, hydroponic cultivation technology that allows plants to absorb significantly greater quantities of minerals. This 10-year agreement with INB:B Technology (AMEX-INB) of New Jersey makes Mannatech the only network marketing company allowed to use a blend of six or more INB-harvested minerals. PhytoMatrix will contain 10 minerals.

INB developed its hydroponics process during the 1990s using Indian mustard, widely known as "nature’s magnet" for its ability to absorb minerals from the soil. Growing Indian mustard using enriched hydroponic cultivation can significantly increase the number and amount of minerals concentrated in the plant’s tissue.

Complementary Medicines - By Dr Ian Brighthope

The correct balance of microflora in the gastrointestinal system is fundamental to health maintenance and disease prevention. A healthy digestive tract with adequate mucous production and appropriate bacterial colonisation prevents the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, modulates disease processes and prevents widespread inflammatory disorders.

The main function of the gut flora, from the host’s point of view, is to prevent colonisation by potential pathogens. It does so by efficiently out-competing invading pathogens for ecological niches and metabolic substrates. Microbial metabolism also serves as an important source of energy for the gut wall, providing up to 50% of the daily energy requirements of colonocytes by
fermentation of carbohydrates to organic acids, mainly butyrate.

A number of factors can disrupt the delicate gut microbial balance. These include stress, lack of digestive secretions, poor diet (high sugar, high protein, high fat and low fibre), illness, food allergies and intolerances, ingestion of antibiotics and/or other medicines, harmful environmental conditions, chemotherapy and chronic disease (e.g. colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease).

Addressing these major causes is the first aim in treatment. Recolonisation with the ‘right’ probiotics is then imperative to gastrointestinal health. Probiotic means ‘for life’, illustrating the health promoting effects of ‘friendly’ bacteria. The most important of these are Lactobacillus rhamnosus and the Bifidobacterium species.

The current interest in probiotics is considerable. The evidence for the efficacy of probiotic therapy in treating a number of conditions is accumulating. This applies not only to the gastrointestinal system, but also to a number of conditions where gut dysbiosis is an important underlying aetiological or aggravating factor (e.g. acne, migraine, constipation, food allergy, some auto-immune disorders and chronic fatigue syndrome).

Mannatech's research team have produced GI-Pro, which is a probiotic dietary supplement supporting health digestive flora.

Personal Nutrition Plan

Taken from "A Long and Healthy Life" by Dr Neecie Moore

I am absolutely committed to my plan! So you might be wondering, "Well, what is yours?"
I had always been hesitant to share my personal supplement program with my readers, because it is an individual thing. Not everyone has the same needs, the same goals, or the same health history.
I take supplements daily.
I was running an alcohol treatment program at a local hospital. We always removed all sugar from the diets of inpatient drug addicts and alcoholics because sugar processes in the body much as alcohol does. One afternoon I was writing in a chart when two of the young male paients came to the desk, harassing me about the absence of sugar from their diets. Since the normal length of stay for the program was two to four weeks and both patients had been in the unit almost two weeks. I felt safe to make a deal with them. I said, "Okay, if you will cut the whining, I promise you that I will eat no sugar as long as you are here. We'll suffer together". They loved the idea!
Well, one of them ended up staying almost twelve weeks. I kept my promise and ate no sugar.
Two things happened that got my attention:

a) I stopped having headaches.
b)That afternoon nap that I needed every day disappeared from my routine.

I vowed then to remove all sugar from my diet.

New Nutrition and Doubting Doctors

Rayburne W. Goen, MD, FACP, FACC.
Tulsa, OK 74136-4502

December 15, 2001

Bill, a former Surgical Technician in the Service, developed Type 2 Diabetes after returning from overseas in the 80’s. When originally diagnosed, his blood sugars were in the 900’s and remained uncontrollably high (above 500) for many years, despite multiple injections of regular Insulin up to 200 units daily, plus Ultra-Lente (long acting) Insulin 120 Units daily. He exhibited Retinopathy, with bleeding inside both eyes requiring years of Laser cautery therapy every 3 months, which provided some improvement but could not prevent subsequent recurrences. He developed Peripheral Neuropathy of both legs and arms with complications of Diabetic Ulcers on his legs and feet, for which amputation was advised. This he refused, but searched the Internet to find a possible relief. He experienced considerable muscle deterioration, with Claudication (leg cramps) and Angina on attempting to walk half a block. He gained weight, up to 330 lbs., with the inactivity. Despite being on multiple anti-hypertension medications, his blood pressure for years averaged 200/115. He developed arthritis, with difficulty doing anything with his hands.

After 4 years, and requests from a Podiatrist, his Physical Therapists, a Neurologist, and a Health South Rehab Doctor, he finally obtained HMO authorization for an electrified “scooter” which enabled him to get up and around… In the early 90’s, over a 3-4 months time period, he had a series of strokes and 3 TIA’s. He was diagnosed Sleep Apnea, complicated by shortness of breath at rest, necessitating 6 assorted inhalers, including nasal and tracheo-bronchial steroids. He experienced heart failure with edema of the lower limbs. The strokes left him with some permanent left-sided weakness, migraine headaches, and double vision. For years he has been on a multiplicity of antibiotics – a month without any was considered a “Good Month”!

Miracle Sugar Prevents Cavities

FYI: Xylitol is derived from the sugar Xylose . Xylose is not readily available in our diets. It appears to discourage the binding of allergens and pathogens to mucous membranes. It also has known anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and may help prevent certain cancers.

Once in a while, something comes along that seems just too good to be true, but all the studies show that xylitol is not only perfectly safe and natural, it protects you from bacteria. People are trying to gain a health advantage by using different artificial sweeteners but they don’t realize most of them are health hazards.

The most popular one is probably the most dangerous. Aspartame, also known as Nutra-Sweet and Equal, has pervaded our world. It is in practically all diet foods and drinks and even along with sugar in candy and most gums. It’s hard to avoid. If you don’t want to be exposed to it, you need to read all the labels in processed and sweetened foods, even if they are not diet.

Why would you want to avoid aspartame? Besides being toxic and allergenic, according to an MSNBC report, many subjects find that it actually stimulates the appetite, and doctors believe that your body reacts the same as if it were sugar, so it’s useless as a diet aid.

The second most common artificial sweetener is sucralose, commercially sold as Splenda. Let me just tell you how they make it. They add chlorine (bleach) to sugar. That’s it. If everyone knew that, there would be no problem. Unfortunately, it is in many diets and so-called health foods like low carb snacks, and 70 percent of unsuspecting American women consume it daily.

The use of sucralose has been attributed to fatigue, confusion, nausea, joint pain, cramps, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, and depression, but shouldn’t be a surprise considering how it’s made. The thing that concerns me is that its use increases by 10 percent each year.

Stevia is a safe herb which makes a very good sweetener; however, some people notice a little after-taste.

Glyconutrients give benefits to general health and wellbeing.

Teenagers Sold Diet to Beat Cancer

An article from The Observer - a newspaper in the UK - definitely supports the use of our phyto sterol supplement. ( endocrine support)

Robin McKie, science editor Sunday March 14, 2004 Observer.
Food that could protect teenagers from developing breast and prostate cancers in later life are to be highlighted by a unique health initiative this week.
The scheme is the handiwork of nutrition experts led by Margaret Ritchie of St Andrews University, and will focus a range of natural compounds known as phyto-oestrogens.
These compounds - which occur in high levels in wholemeal bread, soya, yoghurt, raisins and other fruit - have been found to protect young women at puberty against the development of aggressive breast tumours in middle age. Researchers also suspect phyto-oestrogens - which are found only in plants and vegetables - play a similar role in providing men with protection against prostate cancer.
'Studies have shown that teenagers and young adults who consume reasonably high levels of phyto-oestrogens in their diet are far less likely to develop aggressive forms of breast cancer when they reach middle age,' said Ritchie. 'The trouble is that the general public knows very little about these compounds.'
Research has revealed that women with high levels of these phyto-oestrogens are less susceptible to cancer. 'It appears that they prevent the development of Phytonutrients establish improvements in wellbeing.

Aspartame Issues

1. Are there other safe alternatives to aspartame: There is a new safe sweetener called Just Like Sugar which you can get at any Whole Foods. It's made out of chicory, calcium and orange peel. Dr. Russell Blaylock, neurosurgeon, had them do an analysis to make sure it was free of excitotoxins. Stevia is another safe sweetener you can get in any health food store, which is a sweet herb used for hundreds of years in Brazil with safety.
Both of these sweeteners are safe for diabetics. And the Aspartame Toxicity Centre also has a list of safe sweeteners.2. Aspartame is an excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic drug. There is no safe dose. One lady who never used aspartame was given a piece of sugarfree aspartame gum. This is buccal and works just like nitroglycerin under the tongue. It goes through saliva straight to the brain. She had a grand mal seizure. Her case was used in a TV expose in Georgia.
You are playing Russian Roulette to ever use this chemical substance. Here is a report on aspartame gum: http://www.wnho.net/aspartame_absorption.htm Wrigley has been told for years but instead of removing it they have put it in most of their gums. Beware. Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D. says the reactions to aspartame are not allergic but toxic like arsenic and cyanide. If you wouldn't ingest arsenic don't ingest aspartame. 3. Why is it still on the market when research shows so many health problems? For the same reason as tobacco - addiction, profit and greed. Aspartame liberates free methyl alcohol. Methanol is classified as a narcotic. It causes chronic methanol poisoning. This affects the dopamine system of the brain and causes the addiction. Aspartame is also against the law as the FDA knows but they are a corrupt government organization, the attack dog of Big Pharma. They have absolutely no concern about safe food and drugs, and their approval of deadly substances including aspartame have caused millions of deaths. For instance, it is an abortifacient and also a teratogen causing birth defects and mental retardation.

It's absolute genocide.

Glyconutrients promote health and wellbeing.

Neutralize the Terrorists Within

*How to Neutralize the Terrorists Within

Did you know that there are free radical biochemical „terrorists‰ systematically attacking your cells and the DNA of your cells everyday, on an average of 10,000 hits per day?

These internal weapons of mass destruction are abnormal oxygen molecules (free radicals) that are destroying your health and accelerating the aging process. 73% of all diseases are caused by these free radical biochemical ,,terrorists‰ molecules. This process is known as oxidative stress.

A Free Radical Oxidant molecule is a molecule of oxygen that is MISSING an electron. Because it is so out of balance, it is very dangerous and extremely destructive.

So it STEALS electrons from other molecules in your cells, destroying cells and your precious DNA in the process. Often the DNA is mutated, leading to cancer and other deadly diseases.

*10,000 Merciless Hits a Day

How often does this happen? Scientists estimate that EACH cell in your body takes over 10,000 HITS per day from these oxidant free radicals „terrorists‰!

You can observe this oxidative process outside your body in several ways. Remember the last time you saw a fire? Didn‚t it destroy the material it burned?

*The Burning Within

Fire is a rapid oxidative process. For a literal fire, one „antioxidant‰ is water˜it stops the oxidation process, if you have enough.

We have a raging wild fire burning us up on the inside on a cellular basis, and it is IMPOSSIBLE to get enough antioxidants from our food to control this wild fire.

*Rusting Within

Another oxidative process we can observe that is slower is rust. We are „rusting‰ on the inside because of these free radical oxidants. The ONLY way to slow down this „rusting‰ process is with Antioxidants.

Truth About Exotic Juices

Mangosteen, Noni, Goji, Xango, Thia-Go, G3 are ALL Acidic and Detrimental to Health

Because there is so much buzz out there about Goji Juice and other exotic drinks, we are forwarding you an excerpt from a recent e-mail from Dr. Young. It is a very good read and one which everyone who understands the importance of an alkaline approach to optimal heath should be familiar with so the information can be shared with those being misled about the health benefits of these drinks.

Stephanie McAnaly

Mangosteen, Noni, Goji, Xango, Thai-Go, G3 and other fruit juices claim to
provide nutritional health benefits, or do they? I have tested all of these
so-called nutritional health drinks and they are all highly acidic at a pH
ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 with an ORP (oxidative reduction potential for
buffering acids and providing body energy) ranging from +250 mV to +450 mV.
All of these so-called nutritional health beverages would have the same
toxic acidic effects as drinking an acidic cola drink at a pH of 2.5 with an
ORP at +250 mV. Great for cleaning the corrosion off the battery cables of
your car, but destructive to the digestive system and especially the
delicate intestinal villi of the small intestine where blood is made. All
of these exotic, proton rich fruits and fruit drinks will pull energy from
your body robbing you of needed electrons to keep your body running healthy
and strong.

The reason that products such as Mangosteen, Xango, Goji and Noni seem more
attractive is because the ingredients are "exotic" and most people just
don't know much about the ingredients. The truth is that these exotic fruits
and fruit juices are generally pasturized, full of sugar, and will acidify
the blood and tissues making you sick, tired and fat! Whatever little
nutritional value they might claim to offer is lost in their saturation of
hydrogen ions making these beverages void of any nutritional or energetic
value!

Australians Can Beat Dementia

Diet, exercise can beat dementia

By Luke Layfield and Tamara McLean

May 08, 2007 12:00

Article from: The Daily Telegraph

DEMENTIA may be avoidable and even reversible, so it's time Australians embraced a positive attitude to combating the condition, brain experts urged yesterday.

In a hard-hitting report, three of the country's leading research institutes said there was growing evidence ageing and impaired brains can renew cells and reconfigure itself.

Doctors traditionally thought that dementia was genetic and therefore unpreventable - the findings give hope to millions with the condition, which causes severe memory loss and speech impairment.

Dr David Burke of St Vincent's Hospital said: "It has always been thought that dementia is an inexorable decline of mental impairment.

"In fact, the brain has a remarkable capacity to generate new brain cells. Basic lifestyle changes can reduce their risk of developing dementia and reduce the rate of deterioration."

More than a fifth of Australians aged over 85 suffer from dementia and 5 per cent of the over-65's develop it.

It is currently treated with medication, but this only slows the loss of memory, rather than curing or improving the sufferer's condition.

The study – a collaboration between St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney University's Brain and Mind Institute and the Black Dog Institute, which researches mood disorders – was published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

It found that mental, as well as physical exercise, helped the brain grow new cells.

Dr Burke, whose 81-year-old father is studying a university medical course, said: "A lot of older people have the view that university and learning are for young people and that they are past all that but adult education helps the brain develop new connections and grow new cells."

He said social interaction was particularly important for stimulating brain growth in old age.

The study also found foods rich in fish oils, vitamin B12 and antioxidants aided the brain's cell-growth capacity.

High blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and obesity all impaired the brain's ability to grow.

The findings have implications for those who have suffered brain damage as they suggest the brain has the ability to compensate for damage.

Soil Microbes Study Renews Antibiotic Fears

In today's Calgary Herald: ( In part..)

Soil microbes study renews antibiotic fears

'Stunning' level of immunity makes drugs useless'

Canadian scientists have discovered a vast reservoir of microbial weapons underground that could render antibiotics useless.

The researchers plucked 480 different soil microbes from farms, forests and urban areas from British Columbia to northern Ontario and found

organisms possess a "stunning" level of resistance to antibiotic drugs.

Not only are the microbes immune to medicines that have been on the market for years, they are such masters of biowarfare they could

blunt the effects of new antibiotic drugs, one of which has yet to be marketed in Canada.

"They are just chewing it up, eating it for breakfast," says biochemist Gerard Wright, head of the team at McMaster University in Hamilton. ( SEE ATTACHMENT)

The finding described as"remarkable" in the journal Science Today, give an unprecedented glimpse of the microbial world beneath our feet.

They also point to a vast natural reservoir of antibiotic resistance that could find it's way into human pathogens, creating more superbugs that are resistant to drugs and a growing global menace.

Microbes are known to swap genes for drug resistance like trading cards and the study provides new evidence some resistance from the "under ground world" has already made the leap.

Many Staphylococcal infections seen in North American hospitals no longer respond to the antibiotic Vancomycin, and the researchers have shown they use a mechanism identical to the one in soil bacteria.

They suspect soil microbes passed the genes responsible for Vancomycin resistance to organisms living in the guts of animals and humans on European farms, where the drug was widely used in the 80's. Resistant microbes soon spread around the world and, by the 1990's Vancomycin-resistant infections in patients in North America intensive care units, hospitals and long-term care facilities.

The new study show the soil microbes have many more tricks and could render new and future antibiotics useless and obsolete. "The minute you start to use a new antibiotic, there is going to be something out there that is going to have a mechanism to get around it" says Wright, who emphasizes the need to use antibiotics

sparingly to delay the day bacteria will grow resistant to them.

Antibiotics are widely used on farms, where they are routinely fed to animals and fish to prevent disease and boost growth rates.

In some parts of the world they are also dusted and sprayed on crops.

Obesity Costs Weighed in Excess

The Age 18/10/06

Obesity weighs in as a $21bn-a-year disease

Annabel Stafford, Canberra
October 18, 2006

OBESITY cost Australians $21 billion last year in direct spending, disability and premature death, according to a report to be released in Canberra today.

And it is likely to get worse, with the Access Economics report estimating that by 2025 as many as 7.2 million Australians or 28.9 per cent of the population could be obese — and that's obese, not just overweight.

The report warns that this figure is rubbery, because there is so little information available on the prevalence of obesity.

The report is the first to put a figure on just how much illness occurs as the direct result of obesity.

The findings are likely to increase pressure on the Government to class obesity as a disease in itself and to boost Medicare funding for prevention and treatment.

The report, commissioned by Diabetes Australia, estimates that in 2005 obesity was the direct cause of type 2 diabetes for 102,204 Australians or 10.8 per cent of all those with the disease.

It was also the direct cause of coronary vascular disease for more than 379,000 people and of 12 per cent of strokes; of osteoarthritis for 225,000 people or 14 per cent of all sufferers; and of cancer for 20,430 sufferers.

"The sheer numbers of people who are affected are making this a critical issue to deal with," Diabetes Australia executive director Brian Conway said, "and not only from an economic perspective, but because it's impacting on people's lives."

The Access report breaks down the cost of obesity into $3.767 billion in financial costs such as health treatments and lost productivity and $17.2 billion in "lost wellbeing", or the years of quality life of which it robs people.

Of the $3.767 billion, 29.1 per cent is borne by the obese individuals, 16.4 per cent by their families and friends, and 37 per cent — or $1.4 billion a year — by the Commonwealth.

"The burden is falling on … the whole of society, so it truly behoves the individual and the family to work at how they can improve their eating and exercise," Mr Conway said.

"But it also reinforces … the need to look at the impact of obesity on chronic disease and on the workforce."

Liberal senator Guy Barnett, who will chair today's forum on childhood obesity at Parliament House and who is one of those pushing the Government to recognise obesity as a disease, said the report should be "a wake-up call" for governments and the community.

Senator Barnett said he was struck by the magnitude of the problem among young people, with the report putting the number of obese people aged between 5 and 19 at 280,000 — and increasing. "And this is increasing at significant levels," Senator Barnett said. "If nothing is done we will face a health crisis like we've never seen before."

Access Economics director Lynne Pezzullo, who wrote the report, said it was the first time there had been a measurement of the cost of obesity and the diseases it caused.

Those costs highlighted the desperate need for better prevention, she said.

But Ms Pezzullo warned against "doing something, anything" to fight the epidemic without first measuring how cost effective it was compared with other treatments.

For example, she said, there was no point putting a "fat tax" on sugary drinks or fatty foods, because such taxes did not work.

A ban on advertising fatty foods to children that some groups were calling for might be no more effective, she said.

Glyconutrients greatly help childrens health.

'Sugars' help Nitties turn corner

By Brent Read

October 27, 2006

JAMES Nitties can scarcely believe he turned 24 this week.

He feels old, not because of an arthritic condition that has plagued him for 18 months, but because it only seems like yesterday that he was a star in the junior ranks alongside fellow standouts Michael Sim and Nick Flanagan.

"It feels like it's gone so quick since I played junior golf," Nitties said yesterday after shooting a two-under-par 70 in the opening round of the Queensland Open at Ipswich Golf Club.

"Time flies."

In recent years, it has flown rather painfully for the Melbourne-born Nitties.

It all started with an arthritic condition in his hip, which stopped him walking for eight weeks, stripped him of 13kg and virtually ruined his 2005.

Nitties missed a host of Nationwide Tour events in the US and laboured at qualifying school for the main US Tour. The problem continued into this year, slowly making its way to his foot and forcing Nitties to take painkillers before each round while he played on the third-tier Hooters Tour in the US.

In recent weeks, however, Nitties has seen the clouds breaking.

He has stopped taking painkillers and, on the advice of New Zealand pro Steve Alker, started taking twice-daily doses of Ambrotose, described as a blend of plant saccharides that support the immune system.

"I spoke to him (Alker) at the start of this year," Nitties said.

"He had what I had but just in the foot. I was a bit dubious at first. I only started taking it two weeks ago. Hopefully, it clears everything up and and it won't come back."

Despite his well-documented problems, Nitties still managed to secure his first win as a pro on the Hooters Tour, which he describes as the most competitive mini-tour in the world.

The tour is bereft of million-dollar purses and takes in courses such as Dancing Rabbit Golf Club in Choctaw, Mississippi

It is also a place where major winners John Daly, Tom Lehman and Jim Furyk once plied their trade.

"When it all comes down to it, life is still pretty good," Nitties said.

"I'm feeling good mentally and physically. I'm firing to around 95 per cent.

"I have put on a lot of weight and my foot that has been giving me trouble for the last three months is feeling better."

He is virtually pain-free for the first time in recent memory and his game is getting back to where it should be.

"I have no regrets or anything," he said.

"I am doing what I love."

Health Improvements Abound

Autoimmune disease is now the third major category of illness in the
U.S.:
Seventy-five percent of those affected are women.
By Eileen Vennum, RAC
According to the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association, Inc.
(AARDA), autoimmune disease is now the third major category of illness
in the United States and many industrialized countries, following heart disease
and cancer, and it is the fourth leading cause of disability among women in
the United States. AARDA estimates that 20% of the U.S. population, or one
in five individuals, suffers from some form of autoimmune disease. The
majority (approximately 30 million in the U.S.) of those affected are women.
Autoimmune disease is a category of diseases that includes more than 80
serious, chronic illnesses that are triggered when the body's immune system
mistakes its own tissue as foreign.

It then attacks its own cells and tissues, causing various diseases that involve almost every human organ system, including nervous, gastrointestinal, endocrine, skin, connective
tissues, eyes, blood, and blood vessels. Because symptoms vary so widely, diagnosis is often difficult. Some of the more familiar diseases thought to have an autoimmune
component include ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, rheumatoid and juvenile
arthritis, scleroderma, psoriasis, pernicious anemia, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), insulin dependent (Type I) diabetes, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune hepatitis, and cardiomyopathy. These conditions are chronic and debilitating, and often no effective glyconutrient treatment is available.

AMA ADOPTS PROGRESSIVE POLICY ON COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

28 February 2002
AMA ADOPTS PROGRESSIVE POLICY ON COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE

The AMA has formally adopted a new progressive policy on complementary medicine to reflect its growing usage in the broader community.

AMA President, Dr Kerryn Phelps, said today that GPs are now seeing more and more patients who are using complementary medicines.

"For the best possible health outcomes, it is important that doctors and patients are fully informed on the health claims of these medicines and alert to any possible side effects when used with prescribed medications," Dr Phelps said.

"When patients visit their GP, they should discuss all medicines they have been using - mainstream or complementary - to assist the doctor in advising treatment for any condition.

"It is important to avoid situations where treatments may work against each other.

"In the interests of best practice patient care, it is vital that all complementary medicines - like any medicines - are backed by solid evidence as to their safety, quality and efficacy.

"Evidence is the key to a constructive and forward-looking joint approach involving both mainstream and complementary practitioners.

"Acupuncture, massage and even hypnosis and meditation have been adopted as therapies by Australian GPs.

"Where there is evidence, there is acceptance.

"Doctors need to be informed about potential benefits and potential adverse effects of complementary medicines and therapies to promote open discussion with patients, which leads to informed choices for doctors and patients.

"It is important that doctors are supplied with detailed evidence-based information on complementary medicines in the same way they are informed about mainstream medicines and therapies," Dr Phelps said.

In its 2002-03 Federal Budget Submission the AMA is calling on the Government to provide $1million in research funding to evaluate potential benefits and adverse effects of complementary medicines and therapies.

The AMA Complementary Medicine Position Statement is available on the AMA website.

COPPELL, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 30, 2003--Mannatech, Inc. (Nasdaq:MTEX - News) GlycoScience.com:
The Nutrition Science Site was recognized today as a Spring 2003 Silver Award Winner by the World Wide Web Health Awards. Mannatech's educational website was previously awarded a Merit Award from this organization in the fall of 2001.

The World Wide Web Health Awards is a program that recognizes the best health-related Web sites for consumers and professionals. The program is held twice a year -- spring and fall -- with the goal of providing a "seal of quality" for electronic health information. This year, the top awards, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit, were selected from a field of approximately 300 entries.

"I am thrilled and honored that we have been recognized by the World Wide Web Health Awards for our science team's hard work," said Mannatech Chairman and CEO Sam Caster. "The fact that this is our second award validates our long-term commitment to excellence in health education."

The World Wide Web Health Awards is organized by the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC), a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials. These Web-based health awards are an extension of the HIRC's nine-year old National Health Information Awards (NHIA), the largest program of its kind in the United States. Last year, there were nearly 1,000 NHIA entries from hundreds of organizations.
A panel of international health information and Internet experts judged entries based on accuracy, success in reaching the targeted audience and overall quality. To ensure equal review of all sites at the same time, judges reviewed all entries during a five to six week period.

THE EFFECT OF L-FUCOSE ON RATE MAMMARY TUMOR GROWTH

James M Roseman. A. B., 1. Elizabeth Miller. Ph.D., 1 Murray H. Seltzer, MD., 1,2. Daniel Wolfe, B.S., 1. and Francis E. Rosato. MD.,1. 3.

Different concentrations of L-fucose uniformly produced suppression in the growth rate and a change in the morphology of cells grown in tissue culture. The inhibition of growth of these malignant cells was found to be concentrated dependent with 100% inhibition of growth at a concentration of 50 mg fucose per millilitre of medium and 60% inhibition at a concentration of 12.5 mg fucose per millilitre medium. Using other sugars that are components of glycoproteins, it was shown that glyconutrients such as mannose and galactose could also depress the rate of growth of these tumour cells in culture. When 0.05 ml of packed tumour cells used in these experiments was resuspended in 1 ml of medium and injected into a rat, a tumour grew at the site of injection. This new tumour exhibited similar growth characteristics and showed the same histological appearance as the tumour from which the cell line was derived.

This is pretty damn exciting stuff. Yes, the study was done on rats, not humans, but what scientists in their right minds would take a chance of experimenting on human cancer patients. This is a wonderful example of a complementary modality fighting a disease with a medicine from nature. It is safe, non-toxic and non-invasive. Doesn't that make sense? None of these rats had to suffer through chemotherapy or radiation.

Since this was discovered in 1971 why didn't anybody use it? The pharmaceutical companies were interested. They attempted to make fucose into a drug. When they made fucose synthetically, it didn't work. It only works in its natural state. At that time, there was no way to patent fucose because it is a substance that occurs in nature. If you can't patent it, you can't control the profits, and if you can't control the profits, why spend the 250 million dollars in research it will take to get it approved for use by the FDA? This is why it was forgotten about and why all the tens of thousands women (and some men) who suffered from breast cancer over the last 26 years, may have done so needlessly.

Just in case one of my readers is thinking about it, there is no one to sue here. However, once doctors are made aware of this information and the fact that there is a patented product containing fucose that is available for the public (and has been since October of 1996), they would be irresponsible not to inform their patients.

A new Amercian Medical Association Directive

It is a real tragedy that the orthodox medical community has been taught (incorrectly) by medical schools that drugs and surgery are the only options for cancer. This means that tens of thousands of cancer victims are missing the possible opportunity to use safe non-toxic natural methods that could mean the difference between life and death for many.
In my opinion, patient welfare must always come first without question, both orthodox and alternative practitioners must agree on that point. Medical schools do not teach doctors about the latest in so-called alternative methods, but a new American Medical Association directive has instructed allopathic doctors (medical doctors) to start learning this area of medicine. That's terrific news!
